“I love the way creativity in all fields makes our world a more beautiful place. I get so excited to see and experience good design from around the globe, and consider myself really blessed that, every single day, I get to roll out of bed and be a part of that too.”
Steve’s eye for good design and his natural gift for creating art led him to start Ambient in 2009. While owning a creative agency, and overseeing the creative output of hand-crafted teams is no small task, Steve still plays a major role in designing Ambient’s projects. Believing that true success is always connected to purpose and passion, he loves being involved in the creative process from start to finish.
Steve is also a Technology Aficionado. As a technology early adopter, Steve has an app for everything, often attempting to manage all aspects of his life from the close proximity of the Apple Watch on his wrist, including but not limited to ordering food, finding directions and telling time.
In his time off, Steve advances other creative pursuits by continuing his lifelong love of playing guitar, piano and drums. Also, over the last decade, he made up one-fourth of a cappella recording group, RESCUE.
What is your favorite place you’ve traveled?
I would say New Zealand and Australia. Seeing the Opry house was really cool especially since I went to Australia for music. The fashion is at least a couple years ahead there. Everyone is laid back and it’s a different culture than here in the US. I would love to go back – especially to do client work.
What creative thing excites you the most?
I love doing UI/UX work the best. It makes my brain have to stretch in creative ways. It reminds me of building something like the Choose Your Own Adventure books when I was a kid. It’s fun to answer questions like, How are we going to lead this audience to exactly where we want them to go? Then to design with that intent, which can look different for every client and every project, allowing me to hone my skills and learn something new. What’s better than that?
What’s something you’ve never done that you’d like to learn?
Being a musician I would love to learn to play jazz guitar. To think like a jazz artist is very different than the main stream music you hear. As a musician, it’s all about listening to the rhythm section and not stepping on each other’s toes. I like being a part of something and jazz is about team work – something getting created, that is better because there is an ‘us’ instead of a ‘me’.
What are you passionate about that you’d like to share with others?
I discovered an amazing organization called Charity: Water, when I heard the founder speak at a conference in Nashville. To say that I was deeply moved would be an understatement. While we all have our first world problems with traffic, kids schedules, and other minor annoyances, there are thousands of people in the world who die every day simply because they don’t have access to clean drinking water. Even those who walk hours a day to fetch water are usually filling their buckets from streams and rivers shared with animals and a thousand disesases. It’s shocking and very eye opening.
Charity: Water sets itself apart with its giving model, which funds overhead costs privately and uses 100% of donations toward building wells and using other systems that bring clean water to people world-wide. So not only do people stop dying from preventable diseases, but they are thriving, getting educated, and regaining their dignity. I am honored to donate a percentage of all of Ambient’s proceeds toward bringing clean drinking water to other human beings. It’s exciting and incredibly humbling.
